I love free spirits. They dance to their own drummer, swim against the tide, break the rules – in fact, one of the best entries I’ve seen to this challenge, at Rick Diffley Photography, is about breaking the rules. I’m not that good, but I do think many rules are made to be broken so something new can be discovered.
I call this picture the Three Wise Pelicans. It was taken at Cabbage Tree Point in Queensland. These three were impervious to holiday makers and jet skis – they were waiting for the fishermen to come back, following the boats up the ramp. They had sussed out the human world that took over their habitat and used it to their advantage. These guys are cool. Real free spirits.
Strauss Louw wrote about using glare and light on the lens to give photos a sense of free spiritedness – I love the play of light on water, and the fact that with my new camera I can catch that in interesting ways. This is just ducks in a park, but the way the sun was shining on the water looked so lively and glowing really made this shot for me.
