The weekly photo challenge sent me out into the garden. I love growing things – planting the seeds or the seedlings, then checking on them to make sure they are not too hot or too dry, not to wet or too cold, watching their tiny leaves unfold, right up to the moment when I can pick them and eat them…
But it’s winter here in Queensland, right? Cooler days, cold nights, not much growing? This is what I expect to see…
Ah, but, as people keep reminding me, I have moved down from the cooler climate of the ranges to coastal Queensland. I’m still waiting for winter, although we have had some cold nights. Doesn’t seem to bother the garden though. This year I have planted snow peas, and I am watching them start to grow. Of course, when the picking and eating time comes, I am going to have to beat the grandkids to the first crisp fruits. They’d be trying to eat them now if they knew what I am growing…
It almost feels like spring at the moment, so the plants are flourishing. There’s no frost to bother them. I peeked into the sticky budding heart of my baby frangipani and saw that it thinks it’s spring as well…
The daffodil bulbs have started early too – OK, I’m going along with these guys, they know what season it is, surely…
Even at the local park, I’m outvoted on the time of year. This gorgeous iris proudly proclaims that spring is here – but it”s only august! I protest! What happened to winter? Why are all these people smugly saying, “well, it is Queensland…”
While I was at the park, nature also let me in on something that has been a mystery to me because I never took a close look before – how does bamboo grow?

Great pictures. I envy you right now…your weather sounds delightful while we are sweltering in 116 degree temperatures. I don’t feel like eating much in these temps so I’m melting away like a butterball on hot concrete.

Thanks, Vi, it is lovely now, but I know in December I’ll be longing for cooler days
